Pune, 16th July 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun preparations for the upcoming Pune Grand Tour International Cycling Race, with plans to repair and resurface around 130 km of roads across the city to meet international competition standards.

The civic body’s estimates committee has approved a Rs 167-crore preliminary estimate for the road improvement works.

PMC has divided the project into four phases to complete the work required for the international event. The race, which was revived last year on the initiative of Pune Collector Jitendra Dudi, will once again pass through Pune city, Pimpri Chinchwad and parts of the Pune district. In all, road works covering more than 700 km along the race route will be undertaken, including repairs and resurfacing.

Last year, the civic body upgraded around 450 km of roads for the event. Following a similar plan this year, PMC will spend about Rs 167 crore on improving roads that form part of the race route. Of this, nearly 130 km of roads within Pune city will be repaired and resurfaced to comply with international standards required for hosting the cycling competition.

Rajesh Bankar, head of PMC’s road department, said the roads must meet international specifications for the event. He added that each work package would be awarded to a single contractor to ensure better quality control and timely completion.

City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar said the civic body had already started the process of preparing roads for the race and that the same conditions and quality standards followed last year would apply this year as well. “There will be no compromise on quality. The roads must meet international norms for the cycling event, and tenders for the works will be floated shortly,” he said.

PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said roads would once again be developed according to international standards for the race. He added that the roads upgraded last year had improved traffic movement across the city and that the remaining stretches on this year’s route would now be developed.

The race route within Pune city will cover 135.8 km, of which 52.09 km consists of roads upgraded last year, while 83.66 km will require fresh improvements. The road works are estimated to cost Rs 140 crore, with the overall project outlay pegged at Rs 167 crore.

The work has been divided into four phases. The first phase covers Aundh, Baner, Pashan, the University area and Range Hills over 25.44 km. The second phase includes Senapati Bapat Road, Kothrud, Karvenagar, Sinhagad Road, Parvati foothills, Sarasbaug and Khadakwasla, covering 37.02 km. The third phase spans the central peth areas, Shivdarshan, Gangadham, Kondhwa, Camp and Yewalewadi, covering 44.57 km. The fourth phase includes Bhairoba Nala, Magarpatta, Mundhwa, North Main Road, Vidhan Bhavan, Ganesh Road, Gokhale Road and Deccan, covering 28.72 km.
