159 kg Meow Meow drug Mephedrone seized in Pune, four persons including British national arrested

Pune : In one of the largest seizures in recent times, the Pune customs commissionerate claimed to have seized 159.10 kg of Mephedrone — or Meow Meow, as it is commonly known — worth Rs 25 crore from  the premises of a factory in Kurkumbh MIDC, Daund, about 75 km from Pune.

Four persons including a foreigner have been arrested. They will be produced in court on Wednesday.

Sources said that the mastermind identified as Sandeep Dhume, who hails from Pune and had been living in London, England, for several years. He was hiding in a flat of Galaxy Apartments in Subhash Nagar area, under the jurisdiction of R K Nagar police station, in Patna. He has been detained in Patna and being brought to Pune.

Party drug Meow Meow or Mephedrone is a psychotropic substance under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

According to officials from the Customs department,  based on specific intelligence sleuths from the Narcotics Cell, Pune Customs, raided the factory premises of M/s Samarth Laboratories located in Kurkumbh MIDC area of Daund on Monday evening. The operation continued till the wee hours of Tuesday.

“A simultaneous search operation was also conducted at the residential premises of the mastermind in Patna, Bihar. In the case, a total of four persons including the mastermind who is a foreign national, one of the directors and chemist of the company and raw material supplier for manufacture of the drugs have been apprehended. Further investigation is under process. The international market value of the seized Mephedrone Hydrochloride is about Rs 25 crores”, said K Shubhendra, the deputy commissioner of Customs, Pune Customs commissionerate.
