Pune – In order to keep trouble makers at bay, 24 cameras have been installed at Koregaon Bhima memorial, about 35 km from Pune, to avoid any law and order problem.

The memorial commemorates a battle fought between the British and the Peshwa troops nearby on January 1, 1818. It was also the centre of violence on January 1, this year when a large number of dalits had gathered to mark the 200th anniversary of the battle.

Pune rural police have deployed 10 policemen from Lonikand police station and a company of State Reserve Police Force (SRPF). They maintain a record of visitors including their name, address and phone number besides their photo identity for authenticating the information.

According to police records, 200 visitors arrive at the memorial every day. This number swells to about 500 on weekends. Many come in groups, especially those from outside Pune district.
