Pune, 10th April 2023: Lane cutting is a major problem on the Pune-Mumbai Expressway. In the last three months, the transport department has taken action against 3,911 vehicles for violating traffic rules. Despite clearly defined lanes for different types of vehicles, many motorists continue to drive in the ‘overtake’ lane, causing congestion. In an effort to combat this, trucks and four-wheelers have been marked in white on the road to make them more visible.

On an average, 65,000 to 70,000 vehicles travel on the Pune-Mumbai expressway between Monday and Friday, with an additional 10,000 vehicles on weekends and holidays. The peak traffic period is between 3 pm and 4 pm when drivers enter the ghat section around 5 pm, causing a major traffic jam that lasts until 9 pm, including many container trucks. To avoid this congestion, motorists are advised to avoid this period and plan their journeys between 5 pm and 9 pm.

“The evening rush hour is causing major traffic jams in the ghat section. Passengers should plan their journey accordingly and avoid starting their journey at 3-4 pm,” said Bharat Kalskar, Deputy Commissioner of Transport, Mumbai.

The left lane is reserved for heavy vehicles, the middle lane is for four-wheelers, and the right lane is for overtaking. However, some drivers continue to park their vehicles in the overtaking lane, causing further congestion. The transport department is taking strict action against such violators.
