New Delhi, 17th February 2025: An early morning earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale shook Delhi on Sunday, startling residents from their sleep. According to the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located in Dhaula Kuan at a shallow depth of just 5 km below the surface.

Although categorized as a low-intensity earthquake, the tremors were stronger than usual due to the high population density and shallow epicenter, causing noticeable shaking across the city.

Videos of shaking buildings and startled residents rushing outdoors have gone viral on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. Many Delhiites expressed their shock, with some claiming they had never felt such strong tremors before.

An earthquake with a magnitude between 4.0 and 4.9 is considered moderate and can cause minor disturbances, such as objects falling from walls. The impact of this tremor was amplified as seismic waves traveled easily across the city, leading to intense shaking.

Delhi is classified as a seismically active region due to its positioning on multiple fault lines. The city has experienced frequent tremors over the years, making earthquake preparedness a growing concern for authorities.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and local authorities have assured that no major damage or casualties have been reported so far. However, officials are closely monitoring the situation for potential aftershocks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged citizens to remain calm, follow safety protocols, and stay alert for any aftershocks.
