Rising Temperatures Drive Up Demand and Prices of Juicy Fruits in Pune

Pune, 17th February 2025: As temperatures rise, the demand for juicy and citrus fruits has surged, leading to an increase in the prices of oranges and lemons in Pune’s wholesale market. However, traders have reported that the prices of most vegetables and leafy greens remain stable.
On Sunday, around 90 trucks carrying fruits and vegetables arrived at the Shri Chhatrapati Shivaji Market Yard from various parts of Maharashtra and other states. The wholesale market received 10 tempos of green chilies from Karnataka, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, five tempos of cabbage from Karnataka, and three tempos each of ghevda and pavta from Karnataka. Other arrivals included two tempos of groundnuts, five tempos of shevga (drumsticks) from Andhra Pradesh, ten tempos of carrots from Rajasthan, fifteen trucks of peas from Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, and fifteen tempos of garlic from Madhya Pradesh, according to Vilas Bhujbal, a senior commission agent.
From the Satara division, the market received 500 sacks of ginger, seven tempos of okra, five tempos of guar, ten thousand boxes of tomatoes, four to five tempos of green chilies, ten tempos of dhobal chilies, ten tempos of cucumbers, seven tempos of cabbage, ten tempos of cauliflower, ten tempos of red pumpkin, 125 trucks of onions, and 30 tempos of potatoes from Indore, Agra, and local areas.
The fruit market at the Market Yard has witnessed a price rise in oranges and lemons due to increasing summer demand. While the supply of oranges has risen, their prices have increased by 5-10%. On Sunday, the fruit market recorded arrivals of:
900 to 1,000 sacks of lemons
6 tempos of pineapples
35 to 40 tons of old and new citrus fruits
20 to 25 tons of oranges
15 to 20 tons of pomegranates
12 tempos of papaya
15 to 20 tons of chickpeas
3,000 plastic nets of guavas
1,000 to 1,200 boxes of apples
3 tons of amla (Indian gooseberry)
150 sacks of sugarcane
4,000 plastic nets of melons
15 tons of grapes
Stable Leafy Vegetable Prices
Despite fluctuations in fruit prices, leafy vegetable prices remain stable. On Sunday, the vegetable section received around 1.5 lakh pairs of coriander and 50,000 pairs of fenugreek. Traders reported the wholesale prices (per 100 bunches) of leafy greens as follows:
Coriander: ₹800 – ₹1,000
Fenugreek: ₹700 – ₹800
Shepu: ₹600 – ₹700
Onion greens: ₹700 – ₹800
Chakvat: ₹600 – ₹800
Safflower leaves: ₹600 – ₹800
Mint: ₹300 – ₹400
Flax leaves: ₹500 – ₹600
Radish leaves: ₹1,200 – ₹1,500
Amaranth: ₹700 – ₹800
Chuka : ₹600 – ₹700
Chawalai: ₹600 – ₹700
Spinach: ₹700 – ₹800
Gram leaves: ₹600 – ₹700
With rising temperatures, the demand for refreshing fruits and vegetables is expected to continue increasing, potentially influencing market prices in the coming weeks.
