4 Dead, 2 Missing As Rain Wreaks Havoc Across Pune District; 22 Landslides, Road Closures Hit District; Thousands Evacuated
Pune, 7th July 2026: Four people have died and two others remain missing as torrential rain continued to wreak havoc across Pune district, where flooding, landslides and road closures disrupted normal life over the past two days.
According to the district administration, one family of three was killed in a landslide at Patan village in Maval taluka on Monday, while another person died in Pimpri Chinchwad on Sunday after he came under the retaining wall that collapsed at an under-construction site in Bhel chowk. Search operations were continuing on Tuesday for two persons who were swept away in swollen water bodies in Khed taluka.
District authorities said rescue and relief operations were being carried out by two National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams, four PMRDA disaster response teams, around 300 local disaster management volunteers and five local organisations, in coordination with the district administration, police and other government agencies.
The administration said 22 landslides of varying intensity have been reported across Pune district.
As many as 568 people were rescued from flood-hit areas, while thousands were shifted to safer locations by local authorities. Among those evacuated were 250 people from Taje village in Maval, 80 people from Ambethan in Chakan, around 100 people from the Lonavala area, 30 people from Ghorawadi, 27 people from Bhavdi and eight people from Peth in Khed. Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation shifted around 5,000 residents from flood-prone areas, while Pune Municipal Corporation evacuated 300 people.
The district administration also imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, at major tourist destinations in Maval, including Bhaje waterfall, Lohagad Fort, Visapur Fort, Tikona Fort, Tung Fort, Tiger Point, Lion’s Point and the Pavana dam area. The restrictions will remain in force daily between 6 pm and 6 am from July 6 to August 31.
With the Indrayani river in spate due to heavy inflows from its catchment area, authorities appealed to warkaris to avoid travelling to Dehu and Alandi for the palkhi departure ceremonies and instead join the procession after it enters Pune city limits.
Following an orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the district administration declared a holiday on Tuesday for all primary, secondary and higher secondary schools in Junnar, Ambegaon, Khed, Maval, Mulshi, Rajgad and Bhor talukas.
Heavy rain also forced the closure of several roads across the district. The Missing Link stretch on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway remained closed after a landslide near Tunnel No. 2, while traffic continued on the old Mumbai-Pune highway. The Varandha Ghat section on the Bhor-Mahad road, the Pune-Kolad road near Tamhini, the Paud-Managaon road, roads between Shirgaon and Mohori in Mulshi, Shirgaon on the Mahad-Pandharpur route in Bhor, the Shirgaon-Udhewadi road, and the Pole-Panshet road in Velhe taluka were also shut following landslides and flooding.
The district administration said rescue operations were continuing in affected areas and urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in the ghat sections, until the weather improves.
