Pune, August 14, 2020: The 60 isolation coaches set-up for Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients by the Pune Railway Division remains unused since May. These coaches were restructured to accommodate and facilitate COVID-19 patients’ treatment. However the railway officials have stated that they are ready to provide facility but are waiting for a green signal from the state government.

The Ministry of Railway had announced in April that around 5,200 coaches were transformed into isolation wards, in which 60 coaches were prepared by the Pune railway division. While converting the bogies into isolation wards, the middle berth was removed from them and the bottom of the compartment was filled with plywood.

Pune Railway Division spokesperson Manoj Jhawar said, “As per the demand of the state government, 60 coaches have been kept ready by the railways for the corona patients by making some changes in the internal structure. Their use has not yet been demanded by the government. The railways is ready to deliver coaches to any station as and when required.”
