9-Year-Old Girl Injured in Dog Attack at Baner Society, Police Complaint Filed

Baner, 4th June 2025: A 9-year-old girl sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a pet dog in the children’s play area of Rohan Leher II society in Baner on June 3. The incident occurred between 5:00 PM and 5:15 PM while the child was riding her scooter with friends.
According to a formal complaint lodged at Baner Police Station by the girl’s father, the dog — a pet named Rio belonging to society residents — was being handled at the time by the family’s underage daughter. When the victim attempted to pet the dog, it allegedly attacked her without any provocation, biting her on the upper left hip.
The child was rushed to Manipal Hospital, Baner, for emergency treatment. Medical reports, a doctor’s statement, and CCTV footage from the society premises have been submitted to the police as evidence.
Previous Aggressive Behavior Reported
The complaint also claims that Rio has shown a history of aggressive behavior, including prior attacks on other residents and pets. Despite repeated warnings from society members, the pet owners allegedly failed to take corrective measures or restrict the dog’s access to common areas.
The victim’s father, also a pet parent, emphasized that his daughter is comfortable around animals and was not provoking the dog. “This dog has attacked multiple residents and pets. It continues to be brought into public areas without a leash or adult supervision,” he said.
In another reported case, a female resident alleged that the same dog had bitten her in the parking area while being handled by the underage daughter, leaving her with a permanent injury. She also claimed that the dog’s owners respond aggressively and issue threats when confronted.
Police Register Complaint
According to the Police, a case has been registered under Section 291 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with negligent conduct concerning animals.
Society Residents Alarmed
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents of Rohan Leher II, many of whom are now calling for stricter pet management protocols within the society, particularly in shared spaces like children’s parks.
The girl’s family has urged the police and the society authorities to take immediate action against the pet owners to prevent similar incidents in the future.
