Matheran’s Iconic Toy Train Suspended for Monsoon Season; Shuttle and Freight Services to Continue

Matheran, 4th June 2025: The beloved “Queen of Matheran”, the narrow-gauge toy train running between Neral and Matheran, will take its annual monsoon break starting June 1 and remain suspended until October 15, Central Railway officials announced. The suspension is part of a routine safety measure following landslides reported between Aman Lodge and Water Pipe station due to intense pre-monsoon showers in late May.
The scenic 21-kilometer stretch, known for its lush beauty and fragile terrain, poses heightened risks during the rainy season. As a result, the main passenger service has been paused, with a safety inspection scheduled on October 15 before resumption.
What’s Still Running?
Although the main Neral–Matheran toy train service is suspended during the monsoon, the following essential services will continue to operate:
Aman Lodge–Matheran Shuttle
This short-route shuttle will run daily as per its regular schedule, providing transport for both tourists and locals between Aman Lodge and Matheran.
Freight Mini-Train
To maintain the supply of goods to Matheran, a freight-only service will operate every day except weekends, departing Neral at 8:20 AM and returning before sunset.
Modified Saturday Shuttle
Every Saturday, an empty mini-train will depart Neral at 8:50 AM, travel to Matheran, convert into a passenger shuttle, and return at 2:45 PM with extra coaches.
Safety First
Officials emphasized that passenger safety remains the top priority, and while the train’s temporary suspension may disappoint travelers, these measures are necessary given the terrain’s vulnerability during the monsoon.
The mini-train, a cherished attraction and a heritage mode of transport, draws thousands of tourists each year, especially during the lush monsoon season. The continued operation of the Aman Lodge shuttle and freight train is expected to ease the inconvenience for both tourists and residents.
Travelers are advised to plan accordingly and consider alternate transportation to reach Aman Lodge or Matheran during this period.
