96 years old Bhagwan F Khilnani, Founder Principal of Jai Hindi School, Pimpri, passed away due to old age on the morning of 8th May 2018. He was maternal uncle of veteran journalist, late Roop Karnani.
B.F. Khilnani was a multifaceted personality. He started a school called Jai Hind High School from a small shed at Pimpri and served there for over 25 years. He has also won the State Award for Best Teacher. By the time he retired, it became one of the largest schools in Pimpri, and boasts of colleges as well.
Till he was in school, his life was dedicated to it. It was as if he was wedded to the school. But the day he retired, he never looked back. It was time for him to pursue all his hobbies, for which he had no time earlier.
So he started writing poetry, painting, singing, composing music, collecting stamps, drawing caricatures and what have you.
One after another he penned books in Sindhi & English – poems, short stories, and released them from celebrities & industrialists with much fanfare.
He started learning Urdu at the age of 70. He then compiled a book of Urdu Ghazals, called Dabi Chingariyan, which was released by none other than thespian Dilip Kumar saab. He is the 1st Sindhi to have compiled Urdu ghazals.
He participated in an all-India caricature contest by Hindustan Times, and for his very first attempt – a caricature of Lata Mangeshkar, he bagged the 2nd prize.
He had compiled an album (pictures) of nearly 80 of his paintings and cartoons, which include caricatures of Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar, Shahrukh Khan, to name some.
He has held over 15 events – exhibitions of his paintings, his stamp collection, launch of his books, what have you.
A Saibaba devotee, he never missed his morning routine of going from Pimpri where he resides, to Shivajinagar by auto, to pay his respects at the famous Saibaba temple.
