Pune’s Stray Animal Vaccination Campaign Faces Hurdles as Citizens Block Efforts
Pune, 30th August 2023: The Pune Municipal Corporation’s initiative to vaccinate stray dogs and cats in the city and undertake sterilization procedures has hit a roadblock.
Despite the appointment of two organizations by the Health Department for this purpose, the campaign has ground to a halt due to opposition from citizens. The Municipal Corporation’s Health Department has issued a warning, stating that legal action will be pursued against citizens impeding this vital campaign.
The Health Department of the Municipal Corporation embarked on a mission to sterilize and vaccinate stray dogs and cats within the city’s confines. This campaign is being executed in accordance with guidelines established by the Animal Welfare Board of India.
On April 16, 2020, the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation appointed two organizations, namely the Universal Animal Welfare Society and Canine Control Care Trust, to spearhead the sterilization surgery and vaccination of stray animals in the city. These organizations have been entrusted with the vital responsibility.
However, a significant hurdle has arisen, as the personnel from these organizations are experiencing interference in their efforts to prevent vaccinated stray animals from being released back into specific areas.
This obstruction has considerably disrupted the progress of the campaign.
In light of this situation, Dr. Bhagwan Pawar, the health chief of the Pune municipal corporation, has confirmed that stringent legal measures will be taken against individuals who obstruct the campaign’s progress.
