Pune: Mahayuti’s Victory in Maharashtra Assembly Polls Sets Stage for Local Body Elections
Pune, 25th November 2024: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti, comprising Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), achieved a resounding victory in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Elections, winning 235 out of 288 seats. In Pune District alone, the Mahayuti secured 18 of the 21 seats. With this mandate, the long-delayed local body elections in Maharashtra are likely to be held within the next six months.
Local body elections for Municipal Corporations, Zilla Parishads, Panchayat Samitis, and Municipalities in the state have been postponed for two to three years due to various reasons. However, the overwhelming support for the Mahayuti in the Maharashtra Elections has created a favourable environment, prompting senior leaders to push for early local body polls.
Sources confirm that the Mahayuti Government intends to initiate the election process immediately. Several Municipalities, Zilla Parishads, and Panchayat Samitis have finalised their structures, paving the way for the polls. The government plans to resolve legal challenges and lift stays imposed by the courts on these elections. In the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the ward structure has been established. However, the Maharashtra Government’s decision to exclude Phursungi and Uruli Devachi from the PMC and designate them as separate municipal councils will necessitate structural reorganisation.
While the Mahayuti’s assembly victory boosts its prospects in the local body elections, internal challenges loom. A high number of interested candidates from the BJP, Shinde Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP in various wards could lead to rebellion within the alliance. Speculation persists about whether the three parties will contest the local body elections jointly or independently. The outcome of these elections will test the unity and electoral strategy of the Mahayuti as it seeks to consolidate its recent success.
