Onion Theft in Khed Taluka Causes Rs 70,000 Loss to Farmer
Khed, 29th November 2024: While rising onion prices have provided much-needed relief to farmers, they have also attracted the attention of thieves. In a recent incident, unidentified miscreants stole 25 to 30 sacks of onions from a farmer’s field in Rakshewadi, Khed taluka, causing an estimated loss of ₹70,000. The theft has left local farmers concerned about the security of their crops.
Mahesh Rakshe, a farmer from Rakshewadi near Rajgurunagar, had cultivated onions on 20 gunthas (half an acre) of land. After a successful harvest, he had stored the onions in stacks, intending to sell them in the market within a few days. However, on the night of November 28, thieves broke into his field and made off with 25 to 30 sacks of onions.
The theft was discovered the next morning when Rakshe visited his field and found that the produce had gone missing. This incident has dealt a significant financial blow to the farmer, as onions are currently fetching high prices in the market.
The theft has raised concerns among other farmers in the area, who fear facing similar losses. Authorities have been notified, and an investigation is underway to identify the culprits.
This incident highlights the pressing need for improved security measures in agricultural areas, especially during periods of high demand when crops are valued at premium prices.
