Short Fish Supply Drives Prices Up; Chicken Becomes Budget-Friendly in Pune
Pune, 9th December 2024: The Ganesh Peth fish market continues to witness high fish prices due to limited supply from the country’s eastern and western coasts. With increased demand ahead of the fasting season in March, traders are struggling to source sufficient fish, causing prices to remain elevated compared to last week. On the other hand, an abundant supply of poultry has led to a ₹20 drop in chicken prices, providing some relief to consumers.
Fish Supply And Prices:
On Sunday, the market received a variety of fish:
– Deep Sea Fish: Around 10-15 tonnes, including premium varieties such as Pomfret, Halwa, and Surmai.
– Bay Fish: 200-400 kg, featuring species like Indian Mackeral, Red Snapper, and Soundale.
– River Fish: 700-800 kg, with a significant inflow of Rohu, Catla, and other freshwater varieties from Andhra Pradesh (20-25 tonnes).
Despite this influx, the prices remained steep due to limited availability:
