Pune: PCMC Revives Paid Parking Under Flyovers to Ease Traffic Congestion
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 1st March 2025: The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has decided to reintroduce paid parking facilities under flyovers as part of its Smart City initiative, following the failure of its previous parking policy. The new plan will initially be implemented at three locations: Bharat Ratna JRD Tata Flyover at Nashik Phata, Saint Mother Teresa Flyover in Chinchwad, and Madhukar Pawale Flyover in Nigdi, with execution expected to begin in the coming days.
The decision comes in response to the city’s growing population and rising number of vehicles, which have led to increased traffic congestion and inadequate road space. Unauthorized parking and vehicles obstructing traffic flow have been persistent issues.
PCMC had previously introduced a paid parking policy in 2021, aiming to establish parking facilities at 80 locations. However, the initiative was discontinued in April 2024 due to various challenges, including official inaction, political opposition, lack of police cooperation, and rising instances of intimidation.
The revised parking fees are set at Rs 5 per hour for two-wheelers and Rs 10 per hour for four-wheelers. Bapusaheb Gaikwad, Joint City Engineer of PCMC, stated that after successful implementation at the initial three locations, the policy will be expanded to other areas of the city.
