Key Roads In Pune’s Eastern Zone To Be Widened To Ease Traffic Congestion

Pune, 19th March 2025: In a bid to tackle rising traffic congestion, several major roads in Pune’s eastern region, which pass through Defence land, are set to be widened. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will submit revised proposals to the Ministry of Defence seeking land allocation for the expansion. A crucial meeting regarding the road-widening project was recently held with the Divisional Commissioner, attended by officials from the PMC, Public Works Department (PWD), Ministry of Defence, police, and the Cantonment Board.

In recent years, Pune has witnessed a sharp increase in traffic congestion. To address this, the civic body has been widening several major city roads. However, many alternative routes that could ease traffic flow pass through Defence Ministry territory. Although some of these roads are open to public transport, they remain narrow and do not meet the Development Plan (DP) and Regional Plan (RP) standards. As a result, severe traffic bottlenecks frequently occur.

To resolve this, the PMC and police conducted a detailed survey of the affected roads and proposed their expansion. The roads identified for widening include:
– North Main Road (Kalyani Nagar Bridge to Pingale Vasti)
– Golibar Maidan to Kondhwa
– Lullanagar (Gangadham Chowk area)
– Ghorpadi Road to Bhairoba Nala Road
– Bhairoba Nala to Netaji Nagar Road

The PMC had previously submitted a letter to the Ministry of Defence requesting land for the expansion. However, no action was taken by the concerned authorities. Consequently, the PMC requested a joint meeting with all relevant departments through the Divisional Commissioner’s office.

During the meeting, the Divisional Commissioner directed all departments to collaborate and make decisions beneficial to the city. The PMC was also instructed to submit revised proposals specifying the required land parcels as per the Defence Ministry’s guidelines.
