Mumbai, 21st March 2025: The custodial death of Somnath Suryawanshi at Nava Mondha police station in Parbhani district has taken a serious turn, with a judicial inquiry confirming police brutality as the cause of death. The report, which has now been submitted to the Human Rights Commission, states that Suryawanshi was brutally beaten in custody, leading to his demise. Following this revelation, the Commission has issued notices to the accused police officers, seeking an explanation.

VBA Expresses Outrage
The case has sparked widespread outrage, with the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) taking a strong stance against the alleged police excesses.

Reacting to the report, Siddharth Mokle, State Vice President and Chief Spokesperson of VBA, said, “This is not just the death of a young man, but an exposure of the rot hidden under the veil of law and order.”

He further credited VBA National General Secretary, Adv. Priyadarshi Telang, for ensuring that the victim’s family had a strong legal foundation in their fight for justice. The presence of Somnath’s mother, Vijaya Suryawanshi, and brother, Premnath Suryawanshi, while filing the complaint, has further strengthened the case on both emotional and social grounds.

The incident has ignited widespread protests and anger not just in Parbhani district but across Maharashtra. The key questions now being raised are:
Will the guilty officers face punishment?
Will there be concrete action against custodial violence?
Or will this case, like many others, be reduced to just another statistic?

The marginalized and underprivileged communities in Maharashtra are now looking towards the government and judiciary for decisive action. The demand for accountability and justice has never been stronger—ensuring that Somnath Suryawanshi’s death does not become just another case number in the long list of custodial deaths.
