JEE No Longer the Only Route: IITs Introduce Olympiad-Based Admissions
Reported By Amit Singh
Pune, 22nd March 2025: In a significant shift to the traditional admission process, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) Kanpur and IIT Madras have announced new pathways for undergraduate admissions through performance in international Olympiads, starting from the 2025-26 academic year. This move aims to recognize students with exceptional talent in science and mathematics, providing an alternate route to India’s prestigious engineering institutions beyond the rigorous Joint Entrance Examination (JEE).
IIT Kanpur’s Olympiad-Based Admissions Initiative
IIT Kanpur will offer direct admission to students excelling in international Olympiads across five departments: Biological Sciences and Bioengineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemistry, Economic Sciences and Mathematics, and Statistics. The initiative aligns IIT Kanpur with other institutions such as IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Bombay, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), which have previously introduced Olympiad-based entry routes.
Eligibility Criteria for IIT Kanpur
Candidates applying through the Olympiad pathway at IIT Kanpur must meet the following criteria:
Be of the same age as JEE (Advanced) candidates.
Have appeared for their Class XII (or equivalent) exams for the first time either in the year of admission or the previous year.
Have Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects in their Class XII exams.
Have attended the relevant Olympiad training camp for the subject they are applying for.
Must not have been previously admitted to an IIT through JoSAA or had an IIT admission canceled.
Selection Process
The selection process for Olympiad-based admissions at IIT Kanpur involves two stages:
1. Initial Screening: Each department will review applications based on Olympiad rankings and shortlist candidates accordingly.
2. Written Examination and Interview: Shortlisted candidates will undergo a mandatory written examination, followed by an interview if required.
A selection committee, headed by the Dean of Academic Affairs, will consolidate recommendations from each department to ensure a streamlined admission process and fill available seats.
IIT Madras Launches ScOpE Admission Pathway
IIT Madras has introduced the Science Olympiad Excellence (ScOpE) scheme to offer direct admission to top-performing students in Olympiads without requiring them to take the JEE Advanced. The ScOpE pathway will offer two supernumerary seats per undergraduate program — one of which is reserved for female applicants — starting from the 2025-26 academic year.
Eligibility Criteria for ScOpE Admissions at IIT Madras
Candidates seeking admission through the ScOpE pathway must:
Be Indian nationals or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI)/Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) who obtained their OCI/PIO card prior to March 4, 2021.
Have attended a recognized Olympiad training camp, conducted by institutions like the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) or the Indian Association for Research in Computer Science (IARCS), within the last four years.
Have passed Class 12 (or an equivalent exam) or be appearing for it in the year of admission.
Admission Process and Rank List
Applicants will not go through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal, which is the usual channel for IIT admissions. Instead, IIT Madras has developed a separate portal dedicated to the ScOpE admission process. Shortlisting will be based on Olympiad performance, with admissions made according to the ScOpE Rank List (SRL).
Programs Offered Under ScOpE
IIT Madras will offer a broad range of undergraduate programs under the ScOpE scheme, including:
Aerospace Engineering (B.Tech & B.Tech + M.Tech)
Biotechnology (B.Tech & B.S.)
Chemical Engineering (B.Tech)
Civil Engineering (B.Tech)
Computer Science and Engineering (B.Tech)
Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (B.Tech)
Electrical Engineering (B.Tech)
Engineering Design (B.Tech + M.Tech)
Physics (B.Tech & B.S.)
Mechanical Engineering (B.Tech)
Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (B.Tech)
Ocean Engineering (B.Tech)
Medical Science and Technology (B.S.)
Chemistry (B.S.)
A Growing Trend in IIT Admissions
The new Olympiad-based pathways introduced by IIT Kanpur and IIT Madras reflect a growing trend among premier Indian institutions to recognize students with outstanding achievements in international Olympiads. IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Bombay, IISc, and IISERs have already adopted similar approaches, alongside a few private universities.
These new admission routes do not affect the number of seats available to candidates applying through the JEE, as Olympiad-based admissions are offered through supernumerary seats or alternate pathways.
Commenting on the initiative, Lalit Kumar, IIT Bombay alumnus and founder of Prime Academy Pune, said:
“IITs’ decision to admit Olympiad medalists directly is a progressive step that celebrates deep subject expertise. It won’t impact JEE aspirants — Olympiad qualifiers almost always clear JEE as well; they’ll simply take a different route to the same destination. Effectively, the number of seats available to JEE candidates remains unchanged. For students, this opens a parallel path to the IIT dream — one that rewards passion-driven learning over purely competitive preparation. For IITs, it’s a chance to welcome globally competitive minds who can contribute to research, innovation, and interdisciplinary thinking from Day 1.”
The focus on Olympiad achievers is seen as a step toward embracing students with exceptional subject expertise and nurturing research-oriented minds. As the IITs diversify their admission processes, these initiatives aim to attract globally competitive talent and enrich India’s engineering and scientific landscape.
For aspiring students, these changes mark a pivotal shift — opening new doors to one of the most coveted educational institutions in India.
