Pune: Doctor Deceives Woman into Marriage, Abandons Her After Seven Years; FIR Registered
Yerawada, 29th March 2025: In a shocking case of deception and fraud, Dr. Rahul Gagare, an orthopaedic surgeon, allegedly misled a fellow doctor into believing they were legally married, only to later deny the marriage and abandon her and their child. The woman, who lived with him for over seven years, was left devastated after discovering that Dr. Gagare had never divorced his first wife and was now reportedly living with a third woman.
Dr. Rahul Gagare and the female victim studied medicine together and were involved in a relationship. However, in 2013, Dr. Gagare married another woman, leading the victim to move on with her life and focus on her medical practice.
In 2014-15, Dr. Gagare reconnected with the victim and expressed a desire to marry her. He falsely claimed that he had divorced his first wife and convinced her of his sincerity. In 2016, he conducted a marriage ceremony at his home, making assurances of a committed relationship. The couple subsequently began living together at Dr. Gagare’s residence.
According to the victim, Dr. Gagare and his family subjected her to mental and physical abuse while also making dowry demands. Despite these hardships, she remained in the relationship, and in 2018, she gave birth to their son. However, in 2024, she discovered that Dr. Gagare had never legally separated from his first wife and was now involved with another woman.
In November 2024, the victim approached Yerawada Police Station in Pune to file an FIR. However, Dr. Gagare claimed that they were never married and had only been in a live-in relationship. Due to the absence of a marriage certificate, the police hesitated to register the complaint.
Determined to seek justice, the victim approached the Bombay High Court in February 2025 through her lawyer, Advocate Satya Muley. The High Court issued favorable directions in March 2025, after which the police finally registered an FIR against Dr. Gagare and his family under sections related to bigamy and deceiving a woman into believing she was lawfully married. These offences carry a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.
Speaking about her ordeal, the victim said, “I am traumatized by Dr. Rahul’s deceitful behavior. I am deeply concerned about my life and the future of my son. Because I did not have a marriage certificate, the police were initially hesitant to register my complaint.”
Advocate Satya Muley commented on the growing misuse of relationships in modern society, stating, “With the increasing prevalence of live-in relationships in India, cases of individuals exploiting this concept to deceive and manipulate women are emerging. It is deeply concerning that an educated professional, an orthopedic surgeon, has allegedly engaged in such conduct. This is not just bigamy but a clear example of exploitation.”
He further added, “People must conduct thorough background checks on their prospective partners, including their family, financial, criminal, and marital history, to avoid being deceived.”
Note: Statement of Dr Rahul Gagare will be added after it is received.
