Pune: MNGL Boosts PNG Rollout by 250%, Installs 500 New Connections Daily Amid Rise in Demand
Pune, 28th July 2026: Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has built a network of 131 CNG stations across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, catering to more than six lakh CNG vehicles. The company said daily CNG consumption in the twin cities has now crossed 14 lakh standard cubic metres per day (SCMD).
At present, Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad receive natural gas through City Gate Stations (CGS) at Chikhali and Talegaon, with supply primarily sourced from GAIL’s Dahej-Uran-Dabhol-Panvel (DUPL-DPPL) natural gas pipeline network. With CNG demand rising steadily, the company said peak-hour demand occasionally puts pressure on supplies.
To strengthen supply reliability, MNGL said it is upgrading its gas distribution infrastructure. Pipeline looping work in the Talegaon area is in its final stages and is expected to significantly improve the network’s capacity and operational efficiency.
The company has also begun work on an alternative natural gas supply connection from Pipeline Infrastructure Limited’s (PIL) East-West Pipeline (EWPL). As part of the project, a 60-km steel trunk pipeline is being laid from Navhare to MNGL’s Pune geographical area, providing an additional and more reliable gas source for the city. Another pipeline looping project is also underway in Dighi.
According to MNGL, these infrastructure projects are aimed at ensuring long-term supply security for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The company said it has been regularly updating its CNG dealers about the ongoing infrastructure expansion and measures being taken to strengthen gas supply.
The company noted that CNG demand typically rises during the monsoon as commuters prefer four-wheelers over two-wheelers. To meet the increasing demand, MNGL commissioned 11 new CNG stations across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad over the past year, substantially enhancing gas compression and dispensing capacity.
It has also planned to commission nine more retail outlets during the current financial year, which is expected to improve customer convenience, increase dispensing capacity and reduce waiting time at fuel stations.
As part of customer-centric initiatives, MNGL has installed 17 additional CNG dispensers at high-demand retail outlets to reduce queues during peak hours. Another eight dispensers are planned in the coming months.
The company currently supplies CNG to more than 1,200 PMPML buses every day and said its reliable fuel supply has encouraged the public transport undertaking to further expand its CNG bus fleet.
Besides CNG, MNGL has developed piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure for more than 8.5 lakh households and over 1,000 industrial and commercial consumers in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. The company has laid more than 2,700 km of gas pipelines, with over 4.55 lakh households currently using PNG.
MNGL said it has significantly accelerated its domestic PNG expansion programme. Before the recent surge in demand, the company was providing around 180-190 new PNG connections daily, or nearly 6,000 connections every month. It is now installing around 500 new PNG connections every day—close to 15,000 every month—representing an increase of nearly 250% in installation capacity.
To cater to future demand, MNGL said it is expanding its execution capacity by appointing additional contractors, deploying more technical teams and increasing skilled manpower. The company is also collaborating with technical institutes and training centres to develop trained personnel for specialised city gas distribution work, including pipeline laying, meter installation and commissioning.
MNGL said these initiatives are expected to enable it to increase its installation capacity to more than 800 new PNG connections per day in the future, while continuing to strengthen CNG and PNG infrastructure across Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad.
