Pune: Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital Clarifies It Is Not Responsible for Tanisha Bhise’s Death
Pune, 4th April 2025: The relatives of Tanisha Bhise have alleged that she died due to delayed treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, blaming the hospital’s negligence. However, a report by a hospital-appointed expert committee states that the patient did not follow medical advice, including recommendations for admission with a partial advance payment. The committee also noted that the complaint appears to have been made in frustration over the payment demand and the emotional distress caused by her death.
Following media reports about the alleged delay in treatment, the hospital formed an expert panel comprising Medical Director Dr. Dhananjay Kelkar, Medical Superintendent Dr. Anuja Joshi, ICU Head Dr. Sameer Jog, and Administrator Sachin Vyavahare to investigate the matter.
Key Findings of the Committee Report:
Patient History: Tanisha (identified in media as Tanisha Sushant Bhise, real name Ishwari Sushant Bhise) had been consulting the hospital since 2020. She underwent surgery in 2022 with 50% charity support. In 2023, doctors informed her that a safe pregnancy was unlikely and advised adoption. She did not undergo the required three prenatal checkups at the hospital.
Medical Advice and Non-Adherence: On March 15, she consulted Dr. Ghaisas with IVF reports. The doctor explained the risks of her pregnancy and advised weekly checkups, starting March 22, but she did not return. On March 28, she arrived at the outpatient department (not the emergency room) with her husband and relatives. Though stable, she was advised admission due to her high-risk pregnancy.
Financial Concerns: Doctors explained the potential complications of premature twin delivery, NICU care for 2–2.5 months, and an estimated cost of ₹10–20 lakh. The family indicated financial difficulties. Dr. Kelkar and administrator Sachin Vyavahare advised them to pay what they could, but no family member approached the administration or charity department.
Patient Left Without Informing: When Dr. Kelkar followed up with Dr. Ghaisas, he learned that the patient had left without informing the hospital. Dr. Ghaisas advised her husband to consider Sassoon Hospital if financial constraints persisted, but there was no further communication. Attempts to contact the husband went unanswered.
Death Due to C-Section Complications
A later news report revealed that Tanisha was admitted to Surya Hospital, Wakad, on March 28 at 5:30 PM. She underwent a cesarean on March 29 and died due to complications. The hospital later discovered that her family had not disclosed her prior surgery and cancer-related history.
Committee Conclusion:
Tanisha’s twin pregnancy was high-risk.
She had previously received treatment at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital but did not return for prenatal checkups.
The complaint against the hospital appears to have been made out of anger over the advance payment request.
The hospital maintains that it is not responsible for her death.
