Pune: Prakash Ambedkar Demands Uncut Release of ‘Phule’ Movie; Protests At Mahatma Phule Wada Over Censorship Delays
Pune, 12th April 2025: Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi leader Prakash Ambedkar staged a protest at Mahatma Phule Wada on Friday (11th April), demanding that the biographical film ‘Phule’, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekha in lead roles, be released without any cuts. The film is based on the lives and social reform work of Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule.
The protest comes after the film’s release was postponed due to objections raised by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) over certain scenes. Expressing his displeasure, Ambedkar addressed the media following the demonstration.
“The Censor Board comprises various dignitaries, and their job is to assess whether any content could negatively impact society. However, the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, and we have the full right to oppose the Board’s decisions,” said Ambedkar. “If the Board continues to resist the film’s release in its original form, we will protest outside the homes of its members,” he warned.
Ambedkar emphasized that the film’s scenes are rooted in the documented writings of Mahatma Phule, which were themselves published by the government. “On one hand, the government offers tributes to Phule, but on the other, it suppresses a film depicting his life and work. This hypocrisy must end. ‘Phule’ should be released exactly as it was made,” he asserted.
Ambedkar concluded by stating that if the censor cuts are not withdrawn, further protests will be organized at the Censor Board’s office.
