Bedbug Infestation Disrupts Exams at Pune University Hostels, Students Demand Urgent Action
Pune, 24th April 2025: A severe bedbug infestation has hit the boys’ hostels at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), forcing students to endure sleepless nights and health issues during ongoing examinations. The problem, compounded by recent incidents of rat bites and persistent hygiene lapses, has intensified student concerns about safety and cleanliness in hostel accommodations.
Student representatives, including the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), have repeatedly raised the issue with hostel and university authorities, demanding comprehensive pest control and improved sanitation. According to ABVP’s Shiva Barole, despite these appeals, students allege that the administration has failed to implement effective measures, leading to recurring infestations and escalating health risks.
The lack of prompt action has led to mounting frustration among students, with ABVP warning of protests if the university does not address the crisis immediately. Students report that poor hostel hygiene is at the root of the infestation and urge the administration to prioritise pest management and ensure a safe living environment, especially during the critical exam period.
