Punawale, 18th June 2025: Sumit Dhage, a resident of Punawale, has formally raised concerns regarding the ongoing road and civic infrastructure works in the Gaikwad Nagar area, highlighting issues of construction quality, environmental planning, and public safety. Dhage’s detailed complaint has been submitted to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) and seeks immediate corrective action.

Concerns Over Road Construction Standards

Dhage observed that while part of the road from the entrance of Gaikwad Nagar near Pradeep Sweets towards GK Aarcon has been constructed with a proper two-foot base, the remaining stretch appears to lack foundational depth, featuring only a surface tar layer. He warns that this shortcut approach could compromise the road’s durability, especially as Punawale experiences heavy vehicle traffic and rapid urbanization.

Despite assurances from PCMC officials and the contractor that a second tar layer will be applied after the monsoon, Dhage notes that visible wear and early potholes have already emerged. He argues that without a solid base, the road is unlikely to withstand monsoon rains and ongoing construction activity, potentially leading to repeated repairs and unnecessary public spending.

Call for Sustainable Green Infrastructure

The complaint also emphasizes the importance of compensatory plantation of native tree species along newly developed roads and footpaths. Dhage points to successful examples in areas like Nigdi Pradhikaran, where tree-lined dividers enhance both ecology and aesthetics. He urges PCMC to prioritize green infrastructure in Punawale, a locality facing rising population density and pollution.

Streetlight Quality and Public Safety

Another issue highlighted is the use of what appear to be used or previously removed streetlight poles near Eela Society. Dhage insists that new civic amenities should meet quality standards and be built for longevity, warning that substandard materials could compromise safety and undermine public trust in civic projects1.

Key Demands Submitted to PCMC
Dhage’s letter to PCMC includes the following requests:
– Immediate investigation into the quality and consistency of ongoing roadwork.
– Completion of the entire road using proper foundational standards.
– Plantation of native tree species along dividers and footpaths to restore environmental balance.
– Verification and replacement of questionable streetlight poles with new, durable units.
– Greater transparency, accountability, and quality assurance from PCMC officials and contractors.

Broader Context

Dhage’s concerns come at a time when PCMC is rolling out ambitious infrastructure projects, including the “Harit Setu” initiative aimed at sustainable road development and improved urban mobility. However, local complaints like these underscore the need for strict quality control and community engagement to ensure that rapid development benefits all residents.

“These issues impact all Punawale residents and are critical for long-term public infrastructure sustainability,” Dhage stated in his press note, calling for greater citizen participation in civic planning.
