Pune, 20th June 2025: Pune is drenched not just in monsoon rains but in devotion today as the palanquin processions (Palkhis) of Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj from Alandi and Sant Tukaram Maharaj from Dehu enter the city. The air reverberates with the chants of “Gyanba Tukaram, and “Mauli Mauli” while the city readies itself to host lakhs of Warkaris making their way to Pandharpur.

With a mix of tradition, community spirit, and detailed civic planning, Pune is embracing the centuries-old Vaishnav gathering that unites devotees from all walks of life.

Administrative and Civic Readiness
Speaking ahead of the Palkhi’s arrival, Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said, “This is not just a religious tradition but the spiritual heartbeat of Maharashtra. Pune stands united to serve the Warkaris and ensure their journey is peaceful, safe, and joyous.”

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), in coordination with various civic departments, political leaders, social organisations, and volunteers, has undertaken extensive preparations:

Reception sheds, welcome arches, and shelters have been erected at key points, especially along the Sangamwadi bridge, and near the stopping points at Bhavani Peth’s Vithoba Temple (for Dnyaneshwar Maharaj’s Palkhi) and Nana Peth’s Shri Nivdunga Vithoba Temple (for Tukaram Maharaj’s Palkhi).

Roads have been cleared, cleaned, and repaired; PMC has also deployed emergency teams to drain accumulated rainwater given the ongoing monsoon.

Sanitation and Public Health Measures
To maintain hygiene and prevent infections during the mass gathering, the PMC has installed 2,000 portable toilets, with sanitation work planned thrice a day.
PMC Health Department has rolled out:
Free mobile health clinics along the Palkhi route.
Dedicated medical officers, pharmacists, and nurses on-site.
Spraying of disinfectants on all Dindi resting spots and Palkhi Marg.
Round-the-clock availability at municipal clinics and maternity homes for treatment and first aid.
Fire Safety, Encroachment, and Disaster Response
The Fire Department has cancelled all leaves and is on high alert. Fire engines have been stationed at sensitive spots like Phulenagar and Wakdewadi.
PMC’s Anti-Encroachment Department has cleared obstructions along the route to ensure smooth passage for Warkaris.
The Disaster Management Department is operational 24/7, coordinating closely with the control room to respond to any emergencies.
Electrical and Safety Arrangements
The Electricity Department has ensured:
Proper lighting and sound systems in temporary shelters.
Functional CCTV cameras near key Palkhi locations for safety monitoring.
Power supply to boarding schools and Palkhi rest areas.
Additionally, PMC has appealed to citizens and Warkaris to:
Use designated water and sanitation facilities only.
Avoid eating exposed or stale food.
Dispose of waste responsibly, especially fruit peels and food packaging.
Avoid plastic bags and carry bags, in line with the city’s environmental policy.
Spiritual Respite Amid Rains
Despite heavy rainfall in the region, the spiritual journey continues unimpeded. Sheds and tents are protecting devotees from the rain as they chant abhangs and walk shoulder to shoulder. The two palanquins will stay in the city for two days and depart early Sunday morning (June 22) en route to Pandharpur.

As Pune hosts this vibrant confluence of faith, it reflects the essence of Maharashtra’s shared heritage—where spirituality meets civic responsibility, and tradition meets community care.
