Pune, 27th June 2025: In a bid to curb unsafe travel practices and enhance passenger safety, the Pune Division of Central Railway has apprehended 105 passengers for travelling on footboards, steps, and roofs of moving trains during a special drive. The campaign, conducted between 11th June 2025 and 25th June 2025, was initiated after a tragic incident in Mumbai on 9th June 2025, where several passengers reportedly lost their lives while travelling on footboards.

As per the Indian Railways Act, 1989, specifically Section 156, travelling on the footboard or engine of a train is prohibited. Offenders face the risk of imprisonment for up to three months, a fine of up to ₹500, or both. In addition, violators may also be removed from railway premises by railway authorities.

Strict Legal Action Taken

During the intensive drive, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) took strict legal action against those found violating the law. All offenders have been handed over to the courts for prosecution. The total fine amount imposed on the apprehended passengers is yet to be disclosed.

The Pune Division of Central Railway has reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing railway safety rules and will continue such enforcement drives in the future to prevent dangerous travel habits. Passengers are urged to comply with railway regulations for their own safety and the safety of others.

Continued Efforts for Passenger Safety

This enforcement initiative is part of ongoing efforts by the railway authorities to ensure a safe and secure travel environment for all passengers. Passengers are strongly advised to avoid risky practices and travel only in designated compartments, as safety remains the priority for the railway authorities.
