Pune: Hinjawadi IT Park Traffic Woes Persist as Rs 650 Crore Road Projects Face Land Acquisition Delays

Hinjawadi, 28th June 2025: The persistent traffic congestion in Pune’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, Hinjawadi, remains unresolved as a series of proposed infrastructure projects worth approximately Rs 650 crore face administrative delays. The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) had planned major upgrades, including a flyover and alternative roads, to ease the growing traffic bottleneck in the bustling IT hub.

Despite the urgency, the land acquisition process for these projects has been mired in confusion for the past six months. Responsibility for land acquisition has shifted multiple times, from the Public Works Department (PWD) to MIDC, and most recently to the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), which has now redirected the task back to MIDC. This bureaucratic back-and-forth has stalled progress, keeping the projects confined to paperwork.

The proposed projects include the Laxmi Chowk flyover, a six-lane road from Shivaji Chowk to the crematorium, and a new road connecting IT Park Phases I to III. All three initiatives are crucial for alleviating traffic jams that have been steadily worsening in the Hinjawadi IT Park area. However, with the ongoing administrative confusion, these much-needed infrastructure upgrades remain on hold, prolonging daily commuting hardships for thousands of tech professionals and residents.

PMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase said, “Discussions were held with farmers regarding the flyover in Hinjawadi IT Park and the alternate roads in the area. The farmers have demanded monetary compensation instead of Transfer of Development Rights (TDR). Therefore, MIDC should now send a proposal to the Pune District Collector to proceed with the land acquisition.”

MIDC Regional Officer Archana Pathare stated, “PMRDA has the authority to offer TDR instead of monetary compensation, which is why the land acquisition responsibility was initially given to them. However, MIDC is expected to carry out the acquisition for the IT Park. We have not yet received any official communication or letter from PMRDA regarding this. Once we receive the necessary correspondence, appropriate action will be taken.”
