Pune RTO Launches Marathi Training for Non-Marathi Autorickshaw Drivers
Pune, 28th July 2026: The Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) has launched a special Marathi language training programme for non-Marathi-speaking autorickshaw drivers to improve communication with passengers and promote courteous customer service. Drivers have been asked to complete the mandatory training by August 15, 2026, failing which they could face enforcement action.
According to the RTO, inspections will begin on August 16. Drivers found operating without an official Marathi language communication certificate could face penal action. In serious cases, their driving licences may also be suspended.
To expedite the programme, the RTO has convened a meeting with major autorickshaw unions in the city and urged them to ensure that all non-Marathi-speaking drivers enrol in the training at the earliest.
The department has kept the training programme simple and flexible, taking into consideration the long working hours and livelihood concerns of autorickshaw drivers. A one-hour training session is conducted daily during office hours at the Pune RTO office.
The course focuses on practical Marathi communication required during daily operations, including greeting passengers, asking for destinations, discussing fares, handling payments and interacting politely with commuters.
In addition to classroom sessions, the RTO has provided a free e-booklet to help drivers practise Marathi at home.
Officials said the initiative aims to make passenger-driver interactions smoother while encouraging better public service standards. The RTO has reiterated that drivers who fail to obtain the mandatory Marathi language communication certificate by the August 15 deadline could face strict action during the special enforcement drive beginning the following day.
