Pune, 28th June 2025: In a major boost for Pune’s urban mobility, the Pune Metro will soon add 15 new trains and 45 coaches to its fleet, responding to the sharp rise in daily ridership. The update was shared on the Metro’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday.

This development comes on the heels of the Union Cabinet’s approval of Pune Metro’s Phase 2 project on Wednesday. Estimated at ₹3,626 crore, Phase 2 will extend the existing Vanaz–Ramwadi line through two elevated corridors stretching 12.75 km, adding 13 new stations across growing suburbs like Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi.

“These new lines will be completed within four years,” said Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He added that the Centre, the Maharashtra government, and external financial agencies will share the project costs equally.

According to Vaishnaw, these extensions align with the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), linking Chandani Chowk to Wagholi in a seamless East-West mass transit corridor. The project is also expected to integrate well with Pune’s intercity bus routes, connecting Mumbai and Bengaluru services to Chandani Chowk, and buses from Ahilyanagar and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Wagholi, making onward Metro travel smoother.

“These routes will help decongest major roads like Paud Road and Nagar Road, providing faster, safer, and greener transport options,” Vaishnaw said. The new corridors will connect to the existing District Court Interchange, linking Line-1 (Nigdi–Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjawadi–District Court), thus enabling seamless multimodal travel across the city.

Long-term forecasts estimate Line-2’s daily ridership will grow from 96,000 in 2027 to nearly 3.5 lakh passengers by 2057.

Maha-Metro (Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited) will implement the project, handling all civil, electrical, and mechanical works. Pre-construction surveys and design planning have already started, officials confirmed.

Vaishnaw emphasized that the expansion would unlock Pune’s economic potential, improve public transport infrastructure, and drive inclusive, sustainable growth for the entire region.
