Pune to Get Dedicated Cancer Hospital; Land Near Sassoon Identified: Minister Misal
Pune, 28th June 2025: Plans to establish a dedicated cancer hospital in Pune have gathered pace, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) indicating its willingness to allocate a suitable plot of land near Sassoon General Hospital. Medical Education State Minister Madhuri Misal shared this update after a review meeting at Sassoon Hospital on Friday.
The land, previously leased to a private developer, is expected to be handed over for the proposed cancer hospital soon. “We hope to resolve the land matter shortly so that the cancer hospital project can begin at the earliest,” Misal said.
Highlighting the growing demand for medical care, the minister explained that Sassoon General Hospital currently serves patients not only from Pune but from across the state, resulting in heavy patient loads. To meet this demand, the government has approved the addition of 520 new beds in an 11-storey building on the hospital campus.
Misal further stated that staff recruitment drives will soon address vacant positions, while advanced diagnostic services such as MRI, CT scans, and a cath lab will be expanded to improve treatment capacity.
She also expressed concerns about hygiene standards within the hospital premises and in student hostels, criticizing the current manpower deployment and suboptimal cleanliness. “There are staff shortages, and even the existing staff are not being utilized effectively. Measures will be taken to improve cleanliness standards,” Misal assured.
Proposed Projects at Sassoon Hospital:
Dedicated Cancer Hospital: ₹860 crore
Super-Specialty Hospital: ₹633 crore
MRI Facilities: ₹27 crore
CT Scan Facilities: ₹7.5 crore
Cath Lab Facilities: ₹17 crore
