Kondhwa, 1st July 2025: In the aftermath of a shocking sexual assault on a young woman at Bopdev Ghat last year, Pune police have moved decisively to transform the area into a safer and more technologically secure zone. As part of this effort, authorities have installed a CCTV surveillance system, IP-based speakers, and emergency call boxes. Additionally, floodlights are set to be installed shortly to improve visibility during nighttime hours.

Previously, Deputy Chairperson Dr. Neelam Gorhe had instructed the police to enhance security measures in Bopdev Ghat and other remote locations, including increased patrolling, upgraded police chowkis, the installation of CCTV cameras, and the provision of adequate lighting and public address systems at night. Acting on these directives, the state government allocated funds, enabling Pune police to swiftly roll out these improvements.

According to Senior Police Inspector Vinay Patankar of Kondhwa Police Station, “The ongoing hi-tech security upgrade has been made possible with state government support. Soon, full control of these systems will rest with our station, helping us to monitor and respond to any incidents effectively, preventing unfortunate events in the future.”

At present, 25 high-resolution IP-based CCTV cameras have been installed across the ghat, linked directly to the police control room. These cameras are equipped with IP speakers to allow live instructions to be broadcast to the area. Supporting infrastructure, including 8.5 kilometers of power and fiber-optic lines, has also been laid. Installation of floodlights is progressing rapidly.

The initiative comes after years of public concern regarding the safety of Bopdev Ghat. “Had these systems been in place earlier, that tragedy might have been averted. But better late than never. Authorities must now ensure the systems are regularly monitored and maintained,” said Rohan Suravase, president of the Swabhimani Brigade.
