Pune: Wagholi Residents Denied Voter IDs? WACO Flags Mass Rejections, Calls for Action
Reported by Kajal Bhukan
Wagholi/Pune, 2nd July 2025: WACO (Wagholi Against Corruption Organization) Welfare Association has alleged that the Shirur Election Office is systematically rejecting voter ID applications from residents of Wagholi. The Association described this as a direct threat to democratic rights and a deliberate attempt to disenfranchise hundreds of eligible voters.
WACO President Anil Kumar Mishra, while addressing a press conference at the Patrakar Bhavan in Navi Peth, stated that in the past six months, 163 voter ID applications submitted by Wagholi residents—complete with all necessary documents—have been rejected without a valid explanation. These applications were submitted under Form 6 (for new registration) and Form 8 (for corrections or address changes).
Instead of processing these applications locally, the Shirur Election Office has directed applicants to the Shirur Tehsil Office, which is nearly 50 kilometers away from Wagholi, for in-person verification.
“This distance makes it extremely difficult for senior citizens, working professionals, and women to travel. As a result, applications are being arbitrarily rejected,” Mishra said.
Residents, many of whom have lived in Wagholi for over 15 years and regularly pay government taxes and charges, feel that they are being unfairly denied their fundamental right to vote.
WACO emphasized that the role of election officials is not only to maintain the voter list but also to simplify the registration process and ensure that every eligible citizen can participate in elections. The current system, they argue, creates barriers rather than access and may be discriminatory.
Key Issues Raised by WACO:
Mass Rejection of Applications: 163 applications submitted with complete documentation have been rejected without proper justification.
Unfair Verification Process: Applicants are being asked to travel 50 km for in-person verification.
Denial of Voting Rights: Hundreds of youth, women, and senior citizens are at risk of being excluded from the electoral roll.
Lack of Transparency and Accountability: Officials have failed to provide clear reasons for rejections, raising concerns about political pressure or administrative bias.
WACO’s Demands:
1)Immediate inquiry into the functioning of the Shirur Election Office.
2)Local verification facilities in Wagholi to improve accessibility.
3)Introduction of digital alternatives such as video call verification.
4)Review and approval of unjustly rejected applications.
Mishra further stated that government-led voter awareness campaigns ring hollow if citizens are systematically denied registration. “This is not just administrative failure—it’s a violation of our democratic rights. It seems there is political conspiracy by those who fear they will be defeated in the upcoming municipal elections” he said.
The WACO Welfare Association has warned that if the issue is not resolved immediately, affected residents may resort to large-scale protests. With elections approaching, the onus now lies on the Election Commission and local authorities to restore confidence and ensure that Wagholi’s citizens are not denied their right to vote.
