Pune Mountaineers Successfully Summit Mount Yunam, Hoist Tricolour at 6,111 Metres
Pune, 2nd July 2025: In a proud feat for the city, a team of mountaineers from Pune successfully scaled Mount Yunam in Himachal Pradesh, reaching its summit at a challenging altitude of 6,111 meters and unfurling the Indian tricolour atop the peak.
The expedition was organized by Adventure Junction and included 22 experienced climbers from across the country, of whom seven reached the summit. Among them were Krishna Margale, Manasinh Chavan, and Ananta Kokare from Pune, whose achievements have been widely praised.
The climb posed formidable challenges, including subzero temperatures, high-altitude sickness, and dangerously low oxygen levels of around 9.5%. The team carefully acclimatized with stops at Manali, Keylong, and Bharatpur before setting off from the advance base camp at 2 a.m., ultimately reaching the summit at 10 a.m. despite battling snowstorms, high winds, and rapidly shifting temperatures. Throughout, the climbers motivated themselves with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Ki Jai.”
Many climbers faced hypoxia due to the altitude, forcing some to abandon the mission. “In such situations, maintaining the morale of the team is a huge challenge. But we overcame that and made it to the summit,” said Manasinh Chavan, one of the triumphant climbers.
Their journey was not without setbacks. Krishna Margale shared that the team’s equipment bags were left behind at Delhi airport during transit to Chandigarh, delaying their schedule by nearly eight hours. Despite this, the climbers persevered with a positive attitude and pressed on with their mission.
The diverse expedition team included participants from Haryana (2), Odisha (1), Punjab (2), Delhi (3), Bihar (1), Bengaluru (2), Kerala (1), Maharashtra (4—including three from Pune), Manali (2), and Uttarakhand (2).
