Mumbai, 7th July 2025: Despite the call for a two-day statewide protest by teachers and non-teaching staff on July 8 and 9, the Maharashtra Education Department has confirmed that all schools will remain open on both days. The announcement comes amid widespread confusion among parents and students about possible closures.

Addressing the concerns, Mahesh Palekar, Director of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, issued a formal order stating, “There is no official instruction for school closures. Educational institutions are to operate normally on July 8 and 9.”

The Teachers’ Coordination Committee had earlier declared plans to intensify their protest by gathering in large numbers at Azad Maidan, Mumbai, during the ongoing monsoon session of the Maharashtra Assembly. The protest is being organised to highlight the state government’s alleged failure to meet long-pending promises related to financial grants and benefits for aided schools.

History of the Dispute
In 2024, teachers and non-teaching staff across the state launched a 75-day protest starting from August 1, demanding the release of grants for non-salary expenses, infrastructure, and other benefits. Though the government appeared receptive during a cabinet meeting on October 10, 2024, and later issued a Government Resolution (GR) on October 14, the promised financial aid never materialised.

“The government gave us verbal assurances, but we are still waiting for actual implementation,” said a senior member of the Teachers’ Coordination Committee. “After a year of inaction, we have no choice but to demonstrate again to hold the government accountable.”

Protest Without Disruption
The committee clarified that while the protest at Azad Maidan will see the participation of thousands of educators from various parts of the state, it will be conducted in a peaceful and democratic manner without disturbing regular classroom activities.

“We are not shutting down schools. Teachers attending the protest will do so after fulfilling their duties or taking appropriate leave,” said an organiser involved with the demonstration.

What Parents Need to Know
The education department’s directive aims to ensure minimal disruption to students, particularly as the academic year has just begun. Parents are advised to send their children to school as usual unless they receive a specific notice from the school administration.
