Navi Peth, 9th July 2025: Despite being a city steeped in Maratha history, Pune continues to witness the slow erosion of its heritage. A prime example of this neglect is the deteriorating condition of the memorial of Shrimant Balaji Baji Rao, widely known as Nanasaheb Peshwa — a key figure in the expansion of the Maratha Empire.

Located near Poona Hospital in Navi Peth, Nanasaheb’s memorial is now surrounded by garbage, overgrown bushes, broken branches, and plastic waste. Once a site of historical pride, the area now presents a picture of abandonment. Decorative wall paintings and historical murals, which once narrated the legacy of the Maratha rule, are now obscured by untrimmed vegetation and layers of dust. The foul smell in the area has made it uncomfortable for visitors, and many prefer to stay away.

Local residents and history enthusiasts have repeatedly raised concerns and appealed to the Pune Municipal Corporation for regular cleaning and maintenance. While occasional cleanup drives are undertaken, the absence of sustained upkeep has led the site back to its previous state of neglect. Moreover, locals allege that the premises are misused at night by individuals engaging in alcohol consumption, adding to the disrespect shown to this significant monument.

Nanasaheb Peshwa, the eldest son of Bajirao I, assumed the post of Peshwa in 1740. Under his leadership, the Maratha Empire expanded from Attock in the northwest to Bengal in the east. He played a crucial role in gaining recognition from the Mughal emperor, who acknowledged the Marathas as the protectors of Hindustan. His reign is remembered as a period of administrative reform, territorial expansion, and military strength.

It is ironic that such a pivotal historical figure’s final resting place lies in such a state of disrepair. The memorial is not just a monument; it is a reminder of Pune’s rich legacy and the contributions of the Maratha Empire to Indian history.

With growing urban development and administrative apathy, heritage sites like these are slowly fading into obscurity. If prompt action is not taken, future generations may never get to witness these links to our past.
