Pune’s Iconic Goodluck Café Under Fire After Glass Pieces Found in Bun Maska

Shivajinagar, 11th July 2025: A troubling food safety incident has emerged from Pune’s legendary Goodluck Café on Fergusson College Road, after a customer found shards of glass in the café’s widely loved bun maska. The incident has triggered alarm among food lovers and loyal patrons of the decades-old establishment.

Akash Jalgi, who had visited the café with his wife, shared his harrowing experience. “While biting into the bun maska, I suddenly felt something sharp and hard in my mouth. At first, I thought it might be ice, but it turned out to be broken glass,” Jalgi told Punekar News. “It was shocking — a small lapse like this could have caused internal injuries or worse if swallowed.”

Jalgi immediately brought the matter to the attention of the café’s management. The staff reportedly apologized and waived the bill, but Jalgi said the response was not enough. “It’s not just about money. What if a child had eaten it? I’ve submitted an official complaint to the Food and Drug Administration through their online grievance portal,” he added.

In its initial response, the café’s management acknowledged the issue and claimed that the bun maska is sourced from an external vendor. “We have already raised this issue with the supplier. We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused,” Goodluck Café management said.

However, this explanation has not gone down well with many customers. Food safety advocates and frequent visitors have criticized the café for what they see as an attempt to deflect responsibility. “Outsourcing doesn’t absolve you of ensuring quality. The buck stops at the outlet serving the food,” said one longtime patron.

The FDA has confirmed it has received the complaint and said it would initiate an investigation. The incident has since sparked widespread concern on social media, especially among Pune residents for whom Goodluck Café is more than just a place to eat — it’s a nostalgic landmark.

This incident is a reminder that even legacy food establishments are not immune to lapses, and that strict quality control is essential, particularly when public trust is involved.
