Ranchi, 11th July 2025: In a rare and heartwarming incident that touched many hearts across Jharkhand, a pregnant elephant gave birth to a calf on the Hazaribagh-Barkakana railway line near Garhwa, leading to a temporary halt in train services.

The extraordinary event unfolded when a herd of elephants, which had entered the Sarawaha forest area around two weeks ago, strayed close to the railway tracks. One of the elephants, heavily pregnant and in visible distress, stopped near the track — right as labour began.

The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the day, could have turned tragic had it not been for the quick thinking and compassion shown by villagers and officials.

Upon noticing the elephant in pain near the railway line, residents of Garhwa immediately alerted the forest department and railway authorities. Ramgarh Divisional Forest Officer Nitish Kumar responded swiftly, coordinating with the railway administration to stop an approaching goods train from Hazaribagh to Barkakana.

With the rail line temporarily shut down for nearly two hours, the forest team monitored the elephant from a safe distance while ensuring the safety of both the mother and the unborn calf.

Soon after, the elephant successfully delivered her baby on the track itself. Once the mother and calf were safely moved to the nearby forested area, train operations resumed.

“This incident is a rare reminder of how wildlife and human infrastructure intersect — and how empathy and coordination can make all the difference,” said a forest department official at the scene.

The image of the newborn calf standing beside its exhausted but protective mother, right on the steel railway line, left an emotional impact on locals and railway workers alike. For many, it was more than just an interruption of rail traffic — it was a moment of life asserting itself in the most unexpected place.
