Cab Drivers Stopped in Kalyani Nagar for Skipping Strike; Police Disperse Groups
Kalyani Nagar, 15th July 2025: Tensions flared in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area on Tuesday night after reports emerged that some cab drivers were being stopped and allegedly pressured by groups for not participating in the ongoing cab and autorickshaw strike.
Concerned commuters alerted the police, following which authorities intervened and asked the groups to disperse. “We received information and have instructed the individuals to disperse peacefully,” said a police official.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of a larger protest staged by cab and autorickshaw drivers in Azad Maidan, Mumbai, earlier today. The demonstration was called to press for five key demands that the drivers’ unions claim have been long neglected by the state government.
Their primary demands include:
Rationalisation of fares
Fare parity with metered taxis
A complete ban on bike taxis
A cap on the number of cab and auto permits issued
Activation of the welfare board for cab and taxi drivers, along with the introduction of the Maharashtra Gig Workers Act
The protest saw participation from multiple unions representing drivers of cabs, autos, and app-based platforms. Drivers argued that unregulated bike taxi services and lack of fare control are hurting their earnings.

While the protest in Mumbai remained peaceful, the Kalyani Nagar incident has highlighted growing unrest among drivers and potential conflict between those supporting the strike and others choosing to work.
Authorities have urged all groups to maintain law and order and assured that grievances will be conveyed to the concerned departments.
