Pune Ranks 8th Spot in National Cleanliness Rankings for 2024
Pune, 17th July 2025: In a significant leap towards better sanitation and civic hygiene, Pune has secured the 8th position in the nationwide cleanliness rankings under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan 2024. The ranking, released by the central government, assesses cities with a population of over 10 lakh based on cleanliness and solid waste management practices.
The rankings are part of the annual Swachh Survekshan conducted since 2016, under the flagship cleanliness campaign of the Government of India. For the eighth consecutive year, Indore (Madhya Pradesh) has retained its top position and has been awarded the prestigious “Seven Star” status. Surat (Gujarat) and Navi Mumbai (Maharashtra) bagged the second and third ranks, respectively.
Pune’s performance marks a notable improvement from its previous rankings. The city had ranked 37th in 2019, then made a steady climb—15th in 2020, 5th in 2021, and 9th in both 2022 and 2023. This year’s 8th rank is seen as a result of the Pune Municipal Corporation’s focused efforts after last year’s rankings saw several smaller cities outperform Pune.
“After last year’s results, the civic administration carried out a detailed analysis to identify and address the gaps in sanitation and waste management. The upward shift in this year’s ranking reflects the impact of those corrective measures,” said a PMC official.
Despite the progress, officials acknowledge that the city still has room for improvement. “Our aim is to secure a place in the top five again. We are working with citizens, NGOs, and stakeholders to strengthen cleanliness drives and waste segregation at source,” the official added.
