Pune Completes All Smart City Projects Worth Rs 3,333 Crore; Maharashtra Records 95% Overall Completion Rate
Pune, 24th July 2025: In a standout performance under the Smart Cities Mission (SCM), Pune has completed all 55 sanctioned projects worth ₹3,333.07 crore, making it one of the few cities in Maharashtra with 100% implementation as of July 11, 2025. This was revealed in a written response by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in the Lok Sabha.
The city’s fully implemented projects span across smart mobility, energy, water, sanitation, social infrastructure, and digital governance—reflecting measurable improvements in urban livability, access to services, and sustainability.
Maharashtra’s 19 Projects Still Pending:
Maharashtra, which had 8 cities selected under SCM, Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Nagpur, Nashik, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, Solapur, and Thane, was sanctioned a total of 347 projects worth ₹16,980 crore. Of these, 328 projects (₹15,424.89 crore) have been completed, while 19 projects worth ₹1,555 crore are still ongoing.

Solapur: 49 projects : 100% complete : ₹1,586.56 Cr
Aurangabad: 47 projects : 45 complete, 2 ongoing
Nagpur: 47 projects : 38 complete, 9 ongoing
Nashik: 53 projects : 51 complete, 2 ongoing
Pimpri-Chinchwad: 25 projects : 24 complete, 1 ongoing
Thane: 52 projects : 50 complete, 2 ongoing
Kalyan-Dombivli: 19 projects : 16 complete, 3 ongoing
No New Funding After March 2025:
The central government confirmed that the Smart Cities Mission officially concluded on March 31, 2025, and there will be no further budget allocation under SCM. However, the Ministry has issued an advisory encouraging cities to repurpose their Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) for ongoing urban development initiatives.
In cities where some projects remain unfinished, reasons cited include legal hurdles, clearance delays, land acquisition issues, vendor shortages, and lack of integration across departments. Small and medium-sized cities also reported difficulty in mobilizing resources efficiently.

The Ministry informed Parliament that NITI Aayog conducted a mid-term evaluation of the mission, and a third-party assessment is currently underway. It also partnered with academic institutions to assess city-level impact and derive learnings for future urban policies.
With most projects completed, Maharashtra is now being encouraged to align urban development priorities and empower local SPVs to tackle emerging urban challenges beyond the Smart Cities Mission.
