Pune: Dengue Cases Surge in Pune as Monsoon Sets In; PMC Ramps Up Preventive Efforts

Dengue Cases In Pune

Pune, 26th July 2025: Pune is witnessing a worrisome spike in dengue cases this July, with figures more than doubling compared to the previous month. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has reported 262 suspected cases of dengue so far, of which 11 have been confirmed.

Health authorities attribute this sharp increase to the ongoing monsoon season, which has led to widespread accumulation of stagnant water—an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. In response, the PMC has intensified its vector-control campaign, deploying fogging operations and inspecting residential and commercial properties for mosquito larvae.

In June, the city had recorded 123 suspected cases of dengue, which now appears modest in light of July’s figures. The month-wise data for 2025 reveals a notable upward trend in both suspected and confirmed cases:

January: 39 suspected
February: 31 suspected, 4 confirmed
March: 18 suspected
April: 19 suspected, 2 confirmed
May: 23 suspected, 2 confirmed
June: 123 suspected, 4 confirmed
July (so far): 262 suspected, 11 confirmed

Alongside dengue, chikungunya, and malaria have also resurfaced. July alone has seen two confirmed cases each of chikungunya and malaria, taking the total chikungunya count to 12 (with earlier cases in February, April, and June) and malaria to 3 for the year.

In its ongoing efforts to curb the spread, the PMC has issued 197 notices and collected ₹71,000 in fines this month for violations related to mosquito breeding. Assistant Health Officer Dr. Rajesh Dighe stated, “The rise in water stagnation due to monsoon rains has significantly contributed to mosquito breeding. We are targeting such sites proactively and taking strict action where necessary.”

PMC has urged residents to play a more active role in disease prevention by:
-Eliminating stagnant water in and around homes
-Using mosquito repellents and nets
-Reporting suspected mosquito breeding areas
-Cooperating with PMC’s field inspection teams
