Ajit Pawar Orders Long-Term Solutions to Ease Hinjewadi Traffic Woes

Pune, 26th July 2025: Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar has instructed key administrative agencies to adopt a long-term, integrated approach to tackle the growing traffic congestion in Hinjawadi and the surrounding areas of the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR). Stressing the urgency of immediate action, he emphasized that road widening and repairs must align with the area’s rapid urban expansion and future infrastructure needs.

Pawar led a comprehensive review meeting on Saturday morning at the PMRDA headquarters in Akurdi, following his on-site inspection of Hinjawadi’s traffic bottlenecks and metro construction. He called for inter-departmental coordination to address both present challenges and future demands in one coherent roadmap.

High-Level Meeting Signals Unified Response
The meeting was attended by several senior government representatives, including Assembly Deputy Speaker Anna Bansode, MLA Shankar Mandekar, Divisional Commissioner Dr. Chandrakant Pulkundwar, PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, District Collector Jitendra Dudi, PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, ZP CEO Gajanan Patil, and Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissioner Vinay Kumar Choubey. Officers from NHAI, MPCB, MIDC, PWD, and other agencies were also present, indicating a collective commitment to urban problem-solving.

Pawar underlined the importance of accelerating metro line construction, widening major arterial roads, and engaging the public in planning processes. He instructed departments to clear encroachments contributing to chokepoints and pointed to recent PMRDA interventions that have started easing traffic in select zones.

“Infrastructure development must keep pace with the growing population and mobility needs of Pune’s IT and industrial corridors,” Pawar said. He urged authorities to take decisive action, especially in areas where road congestion is crippling movement.

Vision for the Next Three Decades Unveiled:
During the meeting, PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase unveiled a master plan addressing the region’s long-term traffic, water, and environmental challenges. His presentation outlined a 30-year blueprint covering water supply strategies, pollution management, and transportation planning.

Key proposals included:
-Indrayani and Pavana River Pollution Control Projects
-Expansion of sewage treatment infrastructure
-Urban planning for rural PMR areas

Road Widening Projects in the Pipeline
To relieve traffic snarls in Hinjawadi, the PMRDA has already begun land acquisition for the expansion of several high-traffic corridors:
-Mercedes Showroom to Mahalunge (MIDC Circle)
-Surya Hospital to Sakhare Vasti
-Surya Hospital to Thakar Vasti to Maan Gaothan
-Mahalunge to Hinjawadi Phase I
-Nande to Maan
-Shani Mandir, Wakad to Marunji

Site Visits Before Meeting:
Before the meeting, Pawar conducted an on-ground survey of critical traffic points and metro progress along Metro Line 3. He visited areas such as Croma to Laxmi Chowk, Shinde Vasti, Marunji Road to Kasar Sai Canal, and Wipro Circle Phase 2. Officials briefed him on ongoing challenges, especially in Pandav Nagar, Marunji, and roads leading to the PMRDA office.
