Pune, 5th August 2025: A tragic accident at the Mutha River project site has led to the death of one worker and injuries to three others, after alleged negligence in following worker safety protocols during drainage line work near Nanded City on Monday. Taking swift action, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has issued a show cause notice to the contractor involved and directed immediate compensation to the victims’ families.

The incident occurred on Monday during excavation work along the riverbed. The project is being executed under the Japanese government’s Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) initiative and is contracted to ‘Nyro Control and Toshiba Water Solution’ based in Surat, Gujarat. The firm had sublet the drainage work to a local contractor, under whose watch the mishap occurred.

Pune Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram visited the site on Tuesday morning to assess the situation. He later visited the hospital where the injured workers are undergoing treatment and interacted with both the victims and PMC officials to gather full details of the incident.

Expressing concern, Commissioner Ram instructed the administration to ensure the safety of all workers is given top priority in ongoing and future projects. “This incident is a serious lapse. Accountability will be fixed, and action will follow,” he said.

A meeting with officials of the project’s contracting companies has been called immediately, where the violation of safety norms will be addressed. Sources in PMC confirmed that further punitive action may be taken against the main contracting firm if lapses are confirmed.

The PMC has assured that compensation to the deceased worker’s family and the injured will be disbursed without delay.
