New Delhi, 6th August 2025: The Department of Posts has officially announced the discontinuation of its decades-old Registered Post service, effective from 1st September 2025, as part of an operational revamp that will integrate it with the existing Speed Post system. All government offices, courts, institutions, and the general public have been directed to transition to the updated framework before the cut-off date.

Until 31st August, both Registered Post and Speed Post services will continue to operate normally. However, starting 1st September, all communications, legal documents, and parcels must be sent exclusively through Speed Post.

Registered Post, once a symbol of secure and premium communication, especially in the 70s, 80s, and 90s, has seen a sharp decline in usage in recent years. The shift is attributed to the dominance of digital platforms such as email and WhatsApp, as well as competition from private courier services and e-commerce logistics.

Introduced in 1986, Speed Post offers similar features to Registered Post, including receipt issuance and delivery tracking, but at a higher rate. Registered Post began at ₹25.96, with an additional ₹5 charged for every 20 grams. In contrast, Speed Post starts at ₹41 for up to 50 grams, making it approximately 20–25% more expensive.

For decades, Registered Post was the go-to option for sending sensitive and legal documents, from university certificates and bank drafts to government appointment letters and court notices. It held particular importance in rural areas, where it was viewed as a symbol of trust and dependability.

The phasing out of Registered Post marks the end of an era in India’s postal legacy, with India Post now embracing faster, digitally enabled solutions through Speed Post to meet evolving communication demands.
