Pune Traffic Gets Smart Boost with ATMS, Reduces Congestion and Increases Green Signal Time
Pune, 8th August 2025: The Adaptive Traffic Management System (ATMS) implemented under the Smart City Project is now significantly improving traffic flow in Pune, says Pune District Administration. Coordinated efforts between the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Traffic Branch, and the Smart City administration have enhanced signal efficiency, reducing congestion and increasing the number of continuous green signals across major roads.
Installed at 125 intersections in 2022, the ATMS system automatically adjusts signal timings based on real-time traffic density. This has led to a 15% reduction in traffic congestion and a 10% increase in average vehicle speeds. Nearly 70% of vehicles now receive uninterrupted green signals, contributing to fuel savings and reduced air pollution.
The project saw an investment of Rs 133 crore for signal installation and networking, along with Rs 52 crore for maintenance and repairs. Cameras installed at intersections provide real-time traffic data, aiding in better traffic planning and enforcement.
Following a Rs 30 crore payment to the contractor last year, significant improvements were recorded in signal operations at several locations. Officials credit the upgrades with increased system efficiency and smoother vehicular movement.
According to PMC Additional Commissioner Prithviraj B. P., ATMS cameras currently analyze junction-specific traffic to control signals. However, integration with Google Maps could enable system-wide traffic assessment, further improving signal timing and service quality.
“Initially, there were complaints due to ATMS, but improved coordination has resolved issues quickly. The frequency of uninterrupted green signals has increased, and more enhancements are expected in the future,” said Prithviraj B. P.
