Pune Police Sub-Inspector Accused of Extorting Hotelier in Kharadi Under Threat of Action
Kharadi, 14th August 2025: A Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) from Kharadi police station has been accused of extorting money from a hotel operator by threatening action, despite the establishment reportedly operating within the legal time limit.
According to the complaint, the incident occurred when the officer entered a hotel at around 12:15 am — more than an hour before the permitted closing time of 1:30 am for hotels and restaurants in Pune. The PSI allegedly recorded a video of a customer having dinner, and the next day summoned the hotelier to the police station. He reportedly demanded money, saying, “If you do my work, I will do your work,” and accepted the amount at 8:30 pm the same day.
Police Respond to Allegations
When contacted, Police Inspector Sanjay Chavan of Kharadi police station confirmed that hotels are allowed to operate till 1:30 am.
“It is understood that the officer went to Mikachi Club Bar & Kitchen at 12:15 am. We had not instructed him to close the hotel. We are gathering information about this,” Chavan said.
Commissioner’s Rules on Hotel Operations
According to the regulations issued by Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, customers at hotels and restaurants should not be disturbed unless exceptional circumstances arise. Police are not permitted to enter the premises repeatedly during operating hours. In cases of rule violations, managers must be called outside, and action can only be taken after establishments close at the scheduled time.
Incident Captured on CCTV
CCTV footage from the hotel reportedly shows the PSI entering the premises at 12:15 am, instructing staff to close, and recording the scene on his mobile phone. The footage also allegedly captures the officer calling the hotel manager and owner the following day.
While action is warranted against genuine violations by hotel or restaurant operators, senior officers have stressed that using the threat of action for personal financial gain is “incompatible with the image of the police force.”
The matter is under internal inquiry.
