Pune, 19th August 2025: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the much-awaited double-decker flyover at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) junction on Wednesday, August 20, in the evening. The project, developed as a long-term solution to the severe traffic congestion in the area, will be opened for vehicular movement immediately after the inauguration.

The ₹277-crore project has been executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) to decongest the busy University Square and Ganeshkhind Road stretch, which has long been a bottleneck for commuters. According to PMRDA Commissioner Dr. Yogesh Mhase, the integrated two-level flyover will ensure smoother traffic management and provide relief to thousands of daily commuters.

As part of the project, the Ganeshkhind Road has also been widened to 45 metres between the University junction and the College of Agriculture (RBI Chowk), ensuring better traffic flow alongside the flyover.

Initially, one corridor of the flyover — connecting Aundh to Shivajinagar — will be opened to traffic. The Aundh and Shivajinagar ramps have been completed, while work on the Baner and Pashan ramps is scheduled to be finished by October 2025, officials confirmed.

Construction of the project began in August 2022 after necessary approvals from the State Government, Pune Municipal Corporation, and PMRDA. Two old single-lane flyovers at the junction were demolished in 2020 to pave the way for the new structure. The project also features a 55-metre-long steel girder to ensure uninterrupted traffic movement through the junction.

Project Highlights-
Total length: 1.7 km
Aundh to Shivajinagar stretch: 1.3 km
Width: 9.5 metres (3 lanes)
Distance between two piers: 28 metres
Project cost: ₹277 crore

Metro Connectivity:
The University junction is also a key site for Pune Metro’s Line 3 (Hinjawadi–Shivajinagar, 23.20 km elevated route), which has achieved 88.51% completion so far. Metro Station No. 19 at University Chowk is under construction, with a pedestrian link planned to connect the station directly to the adjoining Aundh, Baner, and Pashan roads.
