Pune: PMC to Roll Out 24×7 Water Supply in Newly Merged Areas; Tenders Worth Rs 36 Crore Issued

Pune, 21st August 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to expand its 24×7 equitable water supply scheme to the 34 villages merged into the city limits. For this phase, the civic body has floated tenders amounting to ₹36 crore.

PMC officials said the scheme, which was first introduced nearly a decade ago in the core city areas, will now be extended to the fringe regions that often face irregular water supply.

“Residents in the merged areas have long been struggling with uneven distribution. Once this project is executed, the situation will improve considerably,” said Rajesh Shinde, Executive Engineer, Water Supply Department.

According to civic officials, the upcoming work involves laying new pipelines, setting up water meters, and constructing overhead storage tanks. The first phase will begin in Shewalwadi village. “We expect the work to be finished within the next two-and-a-half years,” Shinde added.

Local residents welcomed the move, pointing out that water scarcity has been one of their biggest challenges since the merger. “For years, we have been requesting a reliable supply system. This initiative will finally provide relief to thousands of families,” said Rahul Shewale, a resident of Shewalwadi.

Officials estimated that the daily water supply in these areas would rise by around 25 lakh litres, reaching nearly 1.5 crore litres once the project is completed.

So far, PMC has spent about ₹1,471 crore out of the total sanctioned budget of ₹2,048 crore under the 24×7 water project. Roughly 75% of the work across the city has been completed, and the remaining portions are scheduled for completion by December 2025, officials confirmed.
