Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan Pune Metro Project Picks Up Speed, DPR Submitted
Pimpri-Chinchwad, 1st September 2025: The ambitious Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan Metro project, expected to transform connectivity between Pimpri-Chinchwad and the Chakan industrial belt, is moving forward rapidly with the submission of its Detailed Project Report (DPR) by Maha-Metro. The proposal was discussed in an important review meeting held at Phugewadi on Monday.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Anna Bansode, MP Shrirang Barne, MLA Mahesh Landge, Municipal Commissioner Shekhar Singh, Maha-Metro Managing Director Shravan Hardikar, and senior officials. However, the proactive role of MLA Shankar Jagtap stood out during the discussions.
Call for Six-Car Metro Trains
MLA Jagtap emphasized that Pimpri-Chinchwad’s growing population and rising traffic congestion demand urgent action on mass transit. He said that connecting Chakan, a major industrial hub, to the Metro network would be a “historic step” for the city.
Importantly, he urged officials to revise the DPR to include six-car metro trains instead of the proposed three-car coaches, citing the need to accommodate future urban growth and passenger volumes. Officials were instructed to incorporate this amendment.
Metro Route Highlights
Total Distance: 42 km
Route: Bhakti-Shakti Chowk → Mukai Chowk → Bhujbal Chowk → Nashik Phata → Chakan
Stations: 31
Integration: Joint planning with BRTS on certain routes
Expected Ridership (2031): 3.38 lakh passengers daily
Projected Ridership (2061): 7.80 lakh passengers daily
Boost for Employment and Connectivity
Officials and public representatives agreed that the project could significantly reduce traffic pressure while improving daily commutes. With Pimpri-Chinchwad’s population now exceeding 30 lakh, the metro line is seen as crucial for easing transport bottlenecks, improving industrial connectivity, and boosting employment opportunities.
The consensus among leaders and the strong pitch made by MLA Jagtap for a six-coach metro have further accelerated momentum for the project. If executed, the Bhakti-Shakti to Chakan Metro line is expected to be a game-changer for the Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune metropolitan regions.
